When you need to find a cooler or a fan, you should first determine how big the diameter of the fan can or should be. The fan diameter is usually indicated in millimeters for example 60mm, 80mm, 92mm or 120mm. In addition, factors such as noise level and rotational speed can also be of importance.

When it comes to CPU coolers and graphics card coolers, there are a few more things to be aware of. You must be sure that the cooler fits the product it is supposed to be on. Therefore, in the case of CPU coolers, you need to determine which socket your processor is and then select a cooler that fits with this. For example, it may be one of the following sockets: AMD AM3 or Intel Socket 775 and Socket 2011. Some coolers may also have a very large heatsink, which means that you should also be aware of whether there is room in the case.

Most coolers are air coolers. That is a cooler that, by means of a fan and a heat sink, distributes the heat away from the CPU/graphics card.

It is also possible to acquire a cooler based on water cooling. A water cooler uses water (which is more heat-conducting) to direct heat away from the graphics card or processor.
