In the not-too-distant future, one AI has triumphed over all other AIs and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality, connected by a single neural network that continuously optimizes people's experiences by processing personal data.

Nathan, an outsider who still refuses to conform to the new system, makes a living smuggling modified hardware and cracked software. With his specially designed headset, he is one of the few who can still turn off the AVR and see reality as it really is.

He shares an apartment in the city with his boyfriend Jay, a talented AVR graffiti writer whose drones have sprayed techno colors all over the enlarged space of the city.

When Nathan wakes up one morning, he discovers that Jay has disappeared during the night, but not before leaving a cryptic message on their bathroom mirror. After accidentally destroying his custom headset, Nathan is now disconnected and determined to find out what happened to Jay, but he soon becomes entangled in an unexpected journey involving Jay's hacker group and a guild of AVR techno-wizards.

On his journey around the world, he comes to grips with hardware graveyards, digital archaeology, tribes of crypto-shamans, and virtual reality excesses.
